No. Anyone can make an appointment. However, if you wish to claim a rebate through Medicare, your doctor will need to refer you.

Private health insurance often includes Speech Pathology under your ancillary cover. Please check with your insurer to confirm the  rebate amount.
 
Your child may be eligible for a Chronic Disease Management Plan (formerly called an EPC) which will entitle you to five Medicare subsidised sessions with a speech pathologist. Please see your GP for more information about this plan.
 
Some clients may be eligible to claim additional rebates from Medicare under the “Helping Children With Autism” program. Please see your GP for details.

 Can I Use My NDIS plan?

If your child has a self managed plan or are plan-managed you are able to claim services.
